The latest findings from Counterpoint reveal that online music streaming services grew 32% in 2019 with over 358 million subscriptions.
Spotify earned the number one spot bringing home 31% of revenue shares for the overall market and 35% for total paid subscribers. In 2nd place comes Apple Music with 24% of revenue shares, and 19% for total paid subscribers. But, Apple Music did grow 36% from 2018 for total subscribers.
Counterpoint notes that Spotify took the top spot thanks to its free tier option. They note that other platforms not including Apple Music give users the option to try a free version with limited functionality, which then persuades them to go for the paid option.
Apple has been stubborn with offering anything similar to a free tier, only offering users a free trial for a certain period of time.
