WhatsApp starts slow roll-out of “Search the Web” in-chat feature

WhatsApp announced today it is piloting a new in-chat feature that allows users to search the web for links that have been forwarded, as the company explains:

Today, we’re piloting a simple way to double check these messages by tapping a magnifying glass button in the chat. Providing a simple way to search messages that have been forwarded many times may help people find news results or other sources of information about content they have received.

The feature is an add-on to a feature announced earlier this year that presents messages that have been forwarded many times with a double check-mark. The hope was to further crackdown on the spread of misinformation on the app.

WhatsApp says the new feature today allows users to find out more about the source, and more information about the content they’ve been sent. WhatsApp says it never reads the message itself and instead just redirects it to the web.

The feature is beginning a roll-out today for iOS, Android, and WhatsApp web users in the United States, Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.
