Twitter to begin adding pinned tweet and description to some trends to provide more context

twitter new trending measures rect

In a new blog post today Twitter announced it would begin a slow, and gradual rollout of adding descriptions to some trending topics on iOS and Android. The trending page is complicated, with it becoming the center of increasing political tension over why certain trends vs. others. While Twitter hopes the new additions will ease the tension, it’s just a start

The new changes today will provide a description, or show users a single tweet that summarizes the reason, or context for why something is trending. Twitter says the new description is developed by its curation team that follows its own guidelines. In addition to the human curation team, Twitter says it will add an algorithm to ” identify representative Tweets that aren’t potentially abusive, spam, or posted by accounts trying to take advantage of our system.”

Twitter says the new “representative tweets” and descriptions will be available for the start in “Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.”
