Following the news that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump alongside people close to them tested positive for COVID19, it sent shockwaves throughout the world and social media. Many users and public figures were quick to wish the couple good health and a speedy recovery, however, many have also openly used Twitter to wish death upon Pres. Trump.
In the wake of the hateful remarks, Twitter told Motherboard that users can not openly wish that President Trump dies because of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 1 million people around the world. Twitter says that wishing death upon the President or any individual is in violation of its “Abusive Behavior” rule as per the report:
“Content that wishes, hopes or expresses a desire for death, serious bodily harm or fatal disease against an individual is against our rules,” Twitter said in a statement. This rule will apparently apply to people who wish death on Trump, who is the single most powerful person in the world.
Twitter further clarified to Motherboard that it won’t act on every tweet that wishes, hopes, or expresses death. Instead, it will prioritize “the removal of content when it has a clear call to action that could potentially cause real-world harm.”
