Apple announced the iPhone 12 series at its October 13th event and with it brought MagSafe back to its product line. MagSafe on the iPhone is a magnetic area on the back of the iPhone that is used to attach a wide range of accessories such as a wallet, chargers, and more.
Apple will begin to sell MagSafe accessories such as silicon and clear cases alongside leather wallet holders beginning on October 16th. While a limited option of accessories is coming directly from Apple, 3rd party companies will have a blast making accessories for the new lineup. One of the most mainstream iPhone accessories is popsockets.
Currently, popsockets are either taped to the back of the iPhone or glued to the case itself. With MagSafe however, accessory makers can directly attach the pop-sockets to the iPhone which would allow for them to be easily removed if needed. In a matter of fact, the company PopSocket which has sold more than 165 million pop-sockets grips since 2014 will support MagSafe technology, TechCrunch has confirmed.
Some people like to use their popsockets with a case on, and it remains unclear if MagSafe’s magnets are strong enough to come through the case. Apple’s own silicon and clear case for the iPhone 12 include a visible magnet on the back, likely meaning that case makers will need to include magnets directly into their case. Already, however, many cases already utilize magnets for popsockets and other accessories.
Apple’s own MagSafe accessories will go on sale on Friday, October 16th. that same day the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be opened for pre-orders. You can learn more about the iPhone 12 here, and you can learn more about the HomePod mini which Apple also announced yesterday here.
